Charity at the Buddha’s door, a sacred place, not only a place to worship, a refuge when people are worried and sad, but a temple is also a place where people come and give their human strength and kindness…

On the 1st and 15th of the lunar calendar every month, there will be a group of ladies and gentlemen, volunteering to distribute food with the monks at Than Quang temple (Ngu Xa, Hanoi). The sisters said that people started this work about a year ago, after going to the temple once, they saw only a few elderly people cooking porridge together, stir-frying vegetables, and making food to distribute to people with complete income. difficult situation. Ms. Huong, who is also doing charity work on the temple, shared: ‘At first, when I saw the women working, I wanted to do the same, but I was afraid, I didn’t dare to ask to work with everyone, just donated money for everyone, so that everyone can help more people with more difficult circumstances. After a while, she was invited to work, so she also went to beg the teachers. I’m sure I’m also predestined, I ask the teachers to let me cook rice for charity, and The teachers immediately agreed. So I still try to make rice and distribute rice evenly, it’s good for me to do this.” Ms. Hoa, the oldest and oldest volunteer at the temple, also shared: ‘Since the day she went to the temple to do volunteer work, she has felt better and happier. Up here, she met people like her, much less bored than lying at home. Just keep her at home, she’ll get sick.”

People start work at the temple at 7 am. People will start distributing rice at noon, so 7 am is when people start going to the market, buying vegetables, meat, tubers, and fruits. The cooking area is at the back, separate from the shrine, so it does not affect the sacred place, but also ensures the nutrients for each meal. Because the temple does not have a lot of human resources, only the monks and about 7 more volunteers, the temple only makes about 100 simple meals. Going to the market to arrive is about 8:30, everyone will gather to prepare and cook. The monks will take care of the vegetables, blow the rice, and the ladies will cook the salty food like meat. Everyone works in a very harmonious and fun atmosphere. Everyone does their own work and helps others, everyone works and talks. These are the stories of everyday life with chicken feathers and garlic shells, but there are also stories that are funny or sad, and there are also stories to share about the history of the Ngu Xa area where many events have occurred. Although chatting and cooking rice, everyone worked really efficiently and carefully. By about 10 o’clock, everyone had finished cooking and prepared to pack food together. A free meal of rice may not sound too special, but actually, each meal that the temple and everyone make looks very full from color, flavor to nutrients. The packaging is also done very carefully and neatly, the person sharing the rice, the person sharing the food…. All still work together and talk. Done everything, each box of lunch is put in the bag, it’s time to share rice with everyone. and there are also stories to share about the history of Ngu Xa area, which has had many incidents. At about 11 o’clock, the temple will open and start the work of distributing rice to people in difficult circumstances. Hand-delivering each box of lunches to those in poor circumstances, I not only heard the words of thanks from those who were given a lunch but also heard the blessings of the teachers and volunteers. for those people. Is this an interference in human love, when the tradition of ‘good leaves cover torn leaves’ is thoroughly promoted in temples?

After everything was done, when 100 meals were all distributed, everyone started to clean up again. On the way to the temple, I saw the excitement and joy on each person’s face and the promises for the next volunteer.

Because of the variety of volunteer work, choosing the right one is extremely important. Otherwise, you and your host will just lose time. Here’s how to find your type of volunteer project and make it a win-win situation.

First, you need to define your goals and expectations. There are many interesting types of volunteer work around the world so you might be confused to choosing which one is more suitable. To help you, I suggest you step back a little and ask yourself what you really expect from volunteering. Do you want to learn about a special field like environment? Or do you want to expand your social network? Or maybe just want to travel and learn about culture? Finding out what your personal goals are and choosing a volunteer this way is definitely important to participate in something you are convinced of in order to do good work and be truly committed to the project.

Second, do what makes you happy. If you love animals, work with animals. If you love connecting with people, go for a social project. And if you love being surrounded by nature, choose environmental volunteer work. Don’t force yourself into anything that you are not interested in this. Remember to find the right volunteering program which equals finding a project that meets your needs. Another way to start is to think about a place you always dreamed to visit, therefore, you will get closer to finding out your right volunteering works.

Last but not least, you should become aware of your skills, especially the professional and interpersonal ones. Do you know what skills make you stand out? It is obvious that empathy and compassion are as important as knowing how to teach something. If you are not sure about your skills, you can ask friends or someone who has experience in volunteering work. Looking through the projects will be a good way to be aware of your skill, or prepare for the skill in which you are not confident.

Different types of volunteering

Volunteering is one of the best ways to use your skills for good and immerse into another culture. In this post, I would like to introduce you to the different types of volunteer work.

  1. Volunteer with children and youth NGOs

If you love working with kids, there are so many NGOs to work with, all aiming for the improvement of children’s lives. They can be children who live in low-income countries with a lack of food, water, etc.

By choosing one of these NGO volunteer opportunities, you get to bring positivity, joy, and love to the lives of underprivileged children.

  1. Volunteer with teaching skills

A great way to volunteer is in a school. Being an English teacher will be a good idea because English is an international language that connects people around the world. Another benefit of volunteer opportunities in schools is that you can integrate with the locals and immerse in their culture.

I think this is the perfect type of volunteer work for beginner travelers. I had experience in teaching English to children from 8-12 years old when I traveled to Vietnam. It was a great opportunity to help students improve their English as well as learn a lot about Vietnamese culture, which then helped me prepare for my trip through the country. Moreover, the kids were just amazing and made me feel so welcome.

  1. Work for environmental and community development

Community and Environment Development are incredibly beneficial. It is based on the belief that everyone should have access to health, wellbeing, education, and opportunities. Working with this development, you have a chance to participate in variable projects so that you can improve your social skills and gain experience.

Visiting C&E Center for Development of Community Initiative and Environment in Vietnam, you will have the opportunity to join in environmental projects like Ecoweek, Training of Trainers, etc or education projects like GoodFood School. Volunteering here will be such an incredibly rewarding and inspiring experience.

There are much more volunteer opportunities in different fields such as farming, health, tourism, etc. In this post, I have just shared the three common kinds of volunteering work. I hope this information will make you interested in volunteering as well as take an action to make the world become better.
